Exmouth dominate opening 10 minutes.

Exmouth U10s were at home to local rivals Withycombe RFC and to preserve the integrity of the pitch the juniors were limited to one game of 30 minutes instead of the usual two. With both Exmouth and Withycombe having squads large enough for two teams, it was agreed to play until half time and then field a different team for the second half.

Exmouth dominated the first ten minutes during which Withycombe were kept in their own half, but the Withy defence stood firm. The Exmouth pack of Harry Sprague and the Neath-Rogers twins (Vinney & Harry) were dominating play and the team were going through the phases but Exmouth were unable to convert the territory and possession into points. Ultimately this was to cost the Cockles the match as when Withycombe did break out to apply some pressure at the other end they scored two tries before half time.

After the break, with fresh players on for both teams, Withycombe were quick to cross for their third Try. Eventually Exmouth were to get reward for their efforts when Stewart Masters broke through the Withy line only to be brought down a few metres short, Toby McConeghy was on hand to gather the ball and score the Cockles first try. Withycombe responded to score twice more.

One player to stand out in the second half was Olly Cowley who was strong in attack and defence, ultimately his penetrating runs resulted in a penalty being awarded for a high tackle. From the penalty Cowley was on his way again when he was tackled he laid the ball back beautifully for Masters to pass out to Blu Sandy who crossed to score his first Try for Exmouth.

Withycombe were being penalised for high tackles throughout the game and when McConeghy was brought down just short of the line again by a high tackle the referee did not hesitate in awarding a Penalty Try.

Exmouth should be pleased with their progress and although Withycombe emerged as 25 – 15 victors this was a truly enthralling game played by two evenly matched and committed teams.

The Player of the Match award went jointly to the Exmouth Pack of Sprague & the Neath-Rogers boys. The Tackler of the Match was awarded to Olly Cowley.
