After the recent cold weather it made a refreshing change to play on a near perfect surface with the sun in the sky. The Home team fielded a strong squad against the smaller Away team, but solid determination and some serious team play throughout produced a well-deserved 35 v 10 win to the Exmouth contingent.
Connor Philp opened strongly with the first try of the match, but, Taunton’s response was swift with a superb dash from a notable player to level the score. Listening closely to team instructions Jory Salter soon stamped his presence with a try in his debut match and earned the ‘Outstanding Effort’ award for his labours. Fast action across the pitch from both teams culminated in Benji Horn completing the first half tally with a top class sprint down the wing to place the ball neatly in touch just before the whistle blew.
The second half allowed Captain Finn Musgrove to prove his ‘Man of the Match’ title; delivering some unanswerable tackles, encouraging his team throughout and putting his name to two tries to boot. Taunton’s tenacious attack spotted a gap in the Cockles defence at one point for a second noteworthy try, but it was not enough against the Young Cockles on fine form. Daniel Brooks took advantage of some great passing to secure a decent penultimate try, before Harry Sale used his height and power to great effect to doggedly drive the ball across the touch line within seconds of the final whistle.
With a win based on solidarity and communication, credit must go to the other players on the squad; William Baker, Solomon McIntyre, Ryan Langson and Raff Gill, who were instrumental from start to finish. Although Taunton’s persistent attack and tireless defence throughout warranted more than their 2 try total in what proved to be an exciting match!.
Spare time and a friendly atmosphere saw the Taunton Ref invite the Young Cockles to mix in with the Taunton squad for some fun ‘rugby tennis’ whilst post match food was prepared. An entertaining end to a great away trip for players and supporters alike!
