It was a familiar story for the Exmouth under 11’s when Exeter Chiefs visited on Sunday. Exmouth played extremely well in the first half of the game and were an even match for the chiefs. Even late into the second half, the game could have gone either way but Exmouth tired in the last part of the game allowing the visiting team to get the win.
Exmouth started the game brightly and had Exeter on the back foot instantly, with some great team work from Exmouth, a nice passing move ended up in the hands of Jack Greenaway, who sprinted through the Exeter defense to open up the scoring. Exmouth continued to play really well together with some nice passing and rucking and their pressure paid off when they added another try before the break. Forward Jed Reid picked up the ball from a ruck and forcefully dived over the line to continue his current scoring form. Nick Eveleigh scored both conversions to extend Exmouth’s lead.
The game started to turn as the visitors started to keep hold of the ball better than Exmouth and so the pressure turned onto Exmouth. Before half time, the Chiefs responded with 2 trys of their own and 1 successful conversion. So at half time, Exmouth had a slender lead of 14 – 12.
The visitors continued in the same way in the second half and so Exmouth were under more pressure again, but Exmouth battled well together as a team and kept the chiefs at bay with some excellent defensive tackling, especially from Ashley Parsons and Charlie Mears. Even when there looked to be a couple of certain Exeter trys, Exmouth cleared well from the boot of James Bridge. But due to Exmouth constantly chasing the ball they tired in the last 10 minutes of the game and the chiefs managed to score another 2 trys along with 1 more conversion, winning the game 14 – 24.
