Exmouth battled well in 1st half away to Topsham but fell short in 2nd half

Like the previous week against Okehampton, Exmouth under 11’ put in a great 1st half performance against Topsham this Sunday, but regrettably fell short in the 2nd half.

Exmouth started the game the better side and took the game straight to Topsham. There was some purposeful driving forward from the team and some forceful rucking to keep the ball alive, which helped Exmouth make the first breakthrough. Jed Reid received a nice pass and then powerfully ran through the Topsham defence to score the try amongst a mob of Topsham players desperately trying in vain to stop him. Nick Eveleigh scored the conversion. Exmouth kept playing well as team but Topsham did manage to respond and scored a couple of try’s of their own after some neat passing work and breakaways runs. They also managed to score both conversions, taking them into the lead. But what was nice to see was that Exmouth’s heads did not drop and they battled back well. They continued to win nearly all the scrums in the first period and some hard try-saving tackles flew in from Aaron Brigham-Jones and Ashley Parsons to name but a few. Exmouth’s perseverance paid off as they leveled things up before the break with again more great teamwork passing the ball out wide to Jack Greenaway, who evaded a couple of on coming Topsham players to score the try. Nick Eveleigh again, put away the conversion.

So it was all to play for in the second half but it was only Topsham who kept their work rate up and therefore kept the ball for the majority of the rest of the game. They scored another 6 trys followed by successful conversions, winning the game by 56 – 14.
