Wild and windy weather made the home team worthy winners against a determined Crediton this Sunday.

A sticky pitch added to the effort required, and whilst the rain held off until end of play, the tricky conditions, combined with a visiting team that had every intention of giving the Young Cockles something to think about, made for an exhausting but enjoyable match. Whilst the paper result went significantly the way of the home team, on the ground it was a hard fought, tight match.
The Cockles took an early lead with two tries, however, the wind proved hard to read and both conversions fell short. Ground was gained slowly though close play and hard work within the scrum, with little opportunity to pass wide or fast. Just before half time Crediton found a break in the Cockles defensive line to put home their first try, followed by a neat conversion leaving the score at 10 v 7 to the Home side on the whistle.
Two minutes into the second half and again the visitors broke through the ranks to land home a try, which was quickly converted making them the new leaders. With both teams visibly tiring in the conditions ground was fought and lost with slow progress across the pitch. Exmouth managed to secure another hard fought try and again the conversion was beaten by the wind, however this precarious lead of one point gave the Home team the boost and the energy they needed. In the last ten minutes of the match the game moved up a gear and the boys started to pass the ball down the line, opening up the game and giving more opportunities to score. Ben O’Neil, Connor Philp, Keenan Palmer and Ieuan Brockway all played significant parts in The Cockles last two tries gaining much ground and allowing Liam Daniels to finish the job by popping the ball over the line, and giving us a final score of 27 to the Home team v 14 to the Visitors.
Try scores today were Finn Musgrove and Liam Daniels. Both played a sound game and were deserving of the honours. Liam also took home the Man of the Match title for his dogged determination to get his hands on the ball throughout the match. Benji Horn took home the Outstanding Effort award for his consistent support work and for making much ground with the ball in the hand.
All in all a good match in testing conditions!
