Whilst the results did not favour the visiting Young Cockles, an exciting game of junior rugby made the long journey down to Totness well worthwhile.

The Exmouth Under 11s picked up where they left off last week, storming out of the starting blocks with a determination that allowed Finn Musgrove to complete an early try. A disappointed Liam Daniels just missed out on a conversion to extend the lead.
Totness proved to be tenacious opponents, however, and came back from the restart to drive the ball their way. Their first effort was placed short of the true line, nonetheless, a try was generously given as the player was deemed to have mistaken a parallel line for the try line. A mistake Finn Musgrove was to repeat in the second half for the Cockles with a less generous outcome. Totnes neatly converted their first try to take the home team into a slight lead and a demoralized Exmouth team were back footed from the next whistle. The home team were quick to take advantage, breaking the line to hammer home a second try, this time ensuring it crossed the correct line to leave the score at 14 v 5 to the Home team at half time.
Much of the contest during the second half took place in fast, furious close contact with the Totness squad showing determination to turn over the ball in the scrum, counter rucking strongly and ripping the ball when any opportunity arose. Exmouth defended with some impressive tackles and neat series of passes, again and again reached spitting distance of the try line, but, against an indomitable Totnes side, lacking the power or resolve needed to finish the job. Finn Musgrove’s discounted try was closely followed by another as a disappointed Benji Horn’s efforts fell short as he was deemed to have double handled the ball across the line.
The Totnes team progressed to increase their lead by a further two tries, each neatly converted. Indicative of the determination of the Cockles throughout this game was the final try, scored by a strong run through from Man of the Match Ieuan Brockway.
The final score of 28 to the home team and 10 to the Exmouth confirmed the strength of play from the home team but belied how truly close the match was. Much of the play was near the Exmouth try line, and there were times when the ball must surely cross that line, however Totness demonstrated real strength in defence and several times fought back from a seemingly impossible position; a lesson for the Young Cockles in tenacious determination to defend and regain possession to the very last stride. Nevertheless the U11 Exmouth boys are quickly developing into a formidable team – with a clear team ethos that leaves the coach facing difficult decisions about match awards. Today Ryan Langson came out on top to be awarded for his Outstanding Effort and terrier like determination to find and keep the ball. Well done too to Leo for some impressive play in his first match for the team.
.
To summarize much good play was on show. The few gaps in defence were pounced on and converted into points by the home team. With much to be proud of and some areas to work this was an exciting close fought game between two well matched teams. Well done boys!
