Exmouth Continue with good performance.

Exmouth U 11’s were a seven players short of a full squad for their visit to Totnes on Sunday but numbers were sufficient for a full team and a couple of replacements. However the young Cockles were determined to impose themselves on the opposition from the start. Exmouth wasted no time in setting up camp well into the Totnes half and Harry Sprague saw an opportunity to challenge the Totnes defensive line, which was strong enough and Sprague scored the opening Try, converted by Arron Lee.

From the restart Exmouth immediately took play back to the Totnes end and twice the forwards took a maul over the line only for the ball to be held up. After the second five yard scrum Exmouth switched the play and Owen Tidball found space in the corner to score a fine try, converted this time by Eddie Ford

Exmouth were playing a great passing game and this left the Totnes team chasing shadows at times. The ball was kept alive and Exmouth were on top form in all positions. The scrum was working well although Scrum Half Stewart Masters had to be very quick to clear the ball as his opposite number was constantly offside at the scrum and rucks. Territory advantage was defiantly with the Cockles so in an attempt to clear the lines a good clearance kick by the Totnes full back brought some relief but it was short lived as it was gathered by Toby McConaghy who ran it straight back at them and side stepped a couple of week tackles to score a great individual try, Which was again converted to close the half with Exmouth firmly in the driving seat at 21 – 7.

The second half got underway while Exmouth appeared to leave the skill firmly in the first half. Totnes were allowed space, tackles were being missed and the ball turned over, eventually Totnes were rewarded with a well earned try and although the conversion attempt was not successful this did bring Exmouth back to life. Nerves were put at ease with another try from Tidball converted by McConaghy.

Continued pressure on the Totnes line by the Exmouth forwards was held back by a more determined defence but Masters needed only the slightest gap to weave his way through after picking up from the back of a ruck to score Exmouth’s fifth try of the morning. The final phase of the game was a vigorous exchange and the Exmouth players were determined to finish their year on a high. In the final minutes Blu Sandy wrestled the ball away in a maul and added his name to the try scorers, converted by McConaghy.

The match concluded with Exmouth running away with a 40 -5 victory and good performances were put in by all the squad including Harry Neath Rogers who was jointly awarded tackler of the match with Arron Lee, although there was also some great covering tackles made on the wing by Josh Cressall. Alec Dunstan was scrumaging well before having to leave the field with an injury and some direct running from Luke Davis, Olly Cowley and Zach Lines was constantly giving the opposition problems. The player of the match ward was richly deserved by Blu Sandy who was outstanding in his forward play.
