Exmouth U11’s Emphatic Win

This season brings some exciting changes to Exmouth U11s with the addition of a second row to the pack and kicking for position entering the game now for this ever improving side the players had a lot to think about as the first match of the season got under way.

It was not long before Exmouth secured the first of many tries to come in the first half when Harry Neath Rogers powered over to score and celebrate his birthday in fine style. Arran Lee stepped up to take the first ever conversion attempt for his team and drilled the ball dead centre between the posts.

From the restart the ball was safely gathered by the forwards who carried through several phases to gain a lot of territory and then set Owen Tidball on his way to score a quick second try. Unfortunately, Lee’s second conversion attempt came back off the post.

Tiverton made some good use of the ball while Exmouth missed the opportunities tomake tackles and Tiverton reduced the deficit and scored their only try of the first half, this was followed by a very good conversion.

The Exmouth Forwards continued to dominate and this allowed space for the backs to run, sometimes when passing along the line might have been a better option! However further tries came in the first half from Owen Tidball, Harry Neath Rogers & Toby McConaghy, all of which were successfully converted by Arron Lee taking the half time score to 33 – 7

In the second half Tiverton defended well but were rarely out of their half. So dominant were the Exmouth pack that the referee had to take the decision to make all scrums uncontested in the interest of safety as Tiverton could not prevent their scrum from collapsing under the pressure. Exmouth continued to run at Tiverton and eventually Harry Neath Rogers secured his third try which again Arran Lee sent straight between the posts.

One negative aspect of the Exmouth game was the failure to use the width of the pitch and set the wingers free. Exmouth have considerable pace on the wings and if the backs were to get the ball out early instead of predictably running at their opponents there would be greater variety to their match play. This failure was to cost them points when Exmouth were penalised for handing off, Tiverton kicked the penalty high and gathered then scored without Exmouth touching the ball. Again the Tiverton conversion was spot on.

Making their Exmouth Debuts were Jack Briggs & Alex Waiton who both put in credible performances and will be an asset to the team. It was an impossible task for the coaching team to select a player of the match so the award went to the whole pack of forwards. Also recognised for their contribution were Toby McConaghy and Stewart Masters who were jointly awarded tackler of the match.

Next week Exmouth U11’s are at home to Exeter Chiefs and although they have made a good start they will have to raise their game again.
