COCKLES PLAY A NEAR PERFECT GAME

COCKLES PLAY A NEAR PERFECT GAME

A very healthy squad of 21 young Exmouthians travelled to the unknown territory of Plymstock on Sunday, determined to yet again vanquish the previous weeks defeat.
Things did not start well for the travelling side as they lost both their wing and one of their props in the opening three minutes.
Despite these early setbacks with a great choice of replacements, Exmouth made very light work of the opening exchanges and it was not long before the diminutive James White went through for the opening score of the day.

Exmouth heads were up and they started playing some fantastic rugby, securing the ball in all areas of the pitch, their scrummaging was strong and the rucking was unstoppable and newcomer Nat Aasmaa was relishing some great possession that resulted in Exmouth’s second score of the day.
Always susceptible to the missed tackle Exmouth did concede half way through the first half, but on a day where defeat was not in their vocabulary they bounced back with two further tries one from Aasmaa and one from Alex Taylor who duly converted to make the scores 5-22 at half time.

As is the way in Junior rugby, several changes were made at half time, but this did nothing to dampen the Cockles team spirit and this was highlighted by some brilliant play immediately from the kick off which ended with Tarquin Kerton-Johnson tearing through the centre of the field to keep the score board ticking over. The Exmouth team really wanted this match, and with Kai Brockway captaining the forwards they bossed every breakdown, and it was not long before the giant Andrew Wheeler powered through for his score of the day.
To their credit Plymstock battled at every stage and with some massive play from their own pack, particularly the lightening number 8 they scored two tries either side of a Harry Gibbings score to keep the game competitive.
Exmouth though really did keep the best for last, and with the clock running down they secured possession deep in their own 22, before the ball passed through five very quick phases involving every Exmouth player on the pitch before a very proud Adam Furneaux captain for the day scored their final try. Ending the game with a well-deserved 15-44 victory to the cockles.

Man of the match went to 21 boys who played as a TEAM.
