Mid Devon delight

After a disappointing start to the season 21 young cockles turned up at a very wet and windy Crediton chomping at the bit to avenge last week’s performance.
Uncharacteristically, the Exmouth under 13’s started quickly and dominated all the play in the opening five minutes but were unable to penetrate the Crediton defence, eventually with the slope in their favour and the wind at their backs Crediton broke through for the opening try. Exmouth knew it was against the run of play and with their heads held high, they secured early ball and rucked and drove relentlessly to the Crediton line where James White went over to score, Alex Taylor stepped up and converted. With two extremely matched teams the next ten minutes were end to end, one streaking run from the Crediton wing was thwarted by a try saving tackle by Adam Furneaux, who also scored the Cockles second try three minutes later, which was increased to 7 points by Harry Gibbings. The first half ended with home team trailing 5 – 14.
With several changes at half time, Exmouth came out with everything to prove, and it didn’t take long for second row Andrew Wheeler to pile down the hill and extend the cockles lead. With a limited squad Crediton definitely didn’t let their heads drop and they themselves battled through some strong Exmouth defending to reduce the deficit. Exmouth though, were not finished yet and continued to boss the game through the forwards, and eventually the Crediton wall cracked allowing Nat Aasmaa to power through and sprint half the pitch to score his first ever try for Exmouth. Overall it was a massively improved performance from the Exmouth Under 13’s that ended with an impressive away score line of 10 – 24.
A massive thanks also goes out to Rob Marshall, Conor Pearson and Dan Armstrong who donned Crediton shirts during the match just so we could continue with a great rugby match.
