The real Faf de Klerk

Being the last Saturday before Christmas and with three senior sides playing it was always going to be a struggle to field a side but as always, the Mighty Nomads responded and undertook the short trip to Exeter Saracens with 16 players. A special mention should go to the Veteran Ian Urmston who was recruited at 12:30 on the Saturday whilst hanging around outside Greggs. Furthermore Ryan Schaufler landed at Birmingham airport at 9 o’clock on the morning and still managed to arrive before kick-off, that’s impressive commitment.

Due to the weather free flowing rugby was always going to be challenging in the conditions but despite this the Exmouth forwards made ground constantly with powerful surges into the Saracens 22 only to be thwarted by a number of knock-ons and some impressive defence by the young Saracens side. Eventually the deadlock was broken when Ian Dunstan powered over from all of half a metre out with the resulting conversion coming from the boot of Glenn Layton. Dunstan commented, 'As I fell over, I broke one of their players. I hope he's OK.' With Exmouth conceding a number of penalties Saracens laid siege to the Exmouth line and eventually a score was forth coming with Saracens showing impressive handling in the conditions to score wide out which resulted in the half time score being Saracens 5 – Exmouth 7.

Exmouth made the one change at HT which saw former Cockles Colt Oscar Kilvington (Faf De Klerk) replace Andy Williams. The second half followed pretty much the same pattern as of the first which was a stop start affair due to the conditions. Exmouth scored one further try through ‘man mountain’ Charlie Garratt who managed to crash over the Saracens line taking half of the Saracens pack with him, the difficult conversion was made to look easy by Layton. 12-5 to take the Win.

Despite a number of cancelled games in the first half of the Season the Nomads to a man have performed impressively and are sat second in the league with a real chance of challenging for the title once again in the new year.

We hope you have a great Christmas, see you on Boxing Day our Eastenders Special; The Ian Beale XV versus The Phil Mitchell XV, kick off from 11.00 am.
