This one was always going to be a cracker against last seasons Merit Table Champions Okehampton. The Cockles, their first home game since October 2019, are chasing down the current league leaders Barnstaple and were looking to move up the table. When the days fixtures were complete our lads climbed up in to second place. Okey Super 2oos arrived buoyant and physical and ran headlong into the boys coming back at them. Again our forwards muscled up and ensured the backs got great ball to work with. Jack Downie went over first, with added conversion from Skip Sam Fulthorpe. Okehampton hit back for the home side to lead 7-5. Next up, big running Jacob Unwin went in from over half way, legs wobbling as he hit the try line. Conversion from Sam, 14-5 at half -time.
An attritional second period, both teams were scrapping for ball possession, especially at ruck time. Okehampton hit next, with a converted try, 14-12. Big carries and even bigger hits from Dan Carey and Joe Harris, with strong support from Ethan Langson Justice and returning Jack Madge, prepared a platform for the pace men outside to attack. Current Colt Thomas Pengilley made two lovely line breaks to cut open the Okehampton defence. Going in to the final 10 minutes The Cockles secured the win when Dan Sanders (pic) went over for his try, zipping round two defenders. Our boys closed out the game with a well-deserved victory 19-12.
Next up a trip to South Devon and a rearranged fixture against Paignton.
