The Cockles lads travelled to Crediton, knowing this would be a tough afternoon, not only the strong opposition but also the searing heat. The first half was pretty even, although Exmouth did take the lead through a very quick, well taken Connor MacDonald try, with the first of 3 first half conversions by Sam Fulthorpe. Tries from Fulthorpe and Erin Inglis added to the tally. Crediton did score two converted tries, one of them a Penalty try for infringement and 2 penalty kicks to make it 21-20 to the visitors at the break. A few uncharacteristic errors did help the hosts get their scores.
After half time, power play from Exmouth eventually decided the outcome. A big feature of this match was the inter play between the forwards and backs, great handling and offload to keep the ball moving. Ultimately this was a contributing factor to keep the scoreboard moving. Tries from Dan Sanders, Sam Fulthorpe again, returning Finlay Marks and Ben Mellor completed the afternoon scoring although Kirton did grab a late consolation try right at the end of the game. Final score 43-27. All the lads featured very well, Dan Sanders wrecking ball running and ball turnovers, Joe Harris stealing line-outs and floor work and a Man of the Match performance from Skipper Sam Fulthorpe will have helped. Most of all this was a team effort in which all made a massive contribution.
Next up; Cullompton 2s at our place.
