Newton Abbot – Cup Game 11th October 2015
Exmouth U16 team served up some very good rugby against Newton Abbot last Sunday in the preliminary round of the Devon Junior Cup. Both sides contributed to an entertaining cup match but The Cockles were deserved victors and can move on confidently from this run out at Rackerhayes.
The visiting pack took control from the outset and the All Whites saw very little ball in the first half. Winger Silvester couldn’t quite ground the ball over the home team’s line in an early attack but sustained pressure, a clean line out take and some simple and speedy passing along the back line was rounded off with a Williamson touch down; Ottaway added the conversion.
Exmouth attacked smartly from the re-start and despite Newton Abbot’s size advantage up front the Cockles were regularly winning turnover ball. From one such turnover a series of attacks resulted in Schauffler snaffling his third try this term.
Exmouth Coach John Justice will be pleased his troops coped well when a brace of injuries forced changes. Cooke was able to return in the second half and distributed well to Silvester who was too quick for the defence and Exmouth had a third try.
At times the home side’s off-loading game and hard work asked questions of the Cockle’s defence but during a period of home-side ascendancy it was Ottaway for Exmouth who scored with a well taken drop-goal. The All Whites kept on competing and were rewarded with an unconverted try at the close of the game
Yet again Exmouth U16s can all be pleased with a good performance but Fulthorpe (9) and Seagar (2) shared the Man of the Match nod; Silvester was the All White’s pick.
The final score was 5-20 and Exmouth can look forward to another outing in the Cup.
