Cockles win on the road.

Tries from Ben Hawley, Charlie Tribble and Dave Bargent (2), plus 11 points from the very reliable boot of Sam Whitehead gave the Cockles their Try Bonus Point victory, away at Old Patesians in Gloucester. Never a foregone conclusion against the bottom of the basement team, it was Old Pats who scored first. The game did not see the first try until 20 minutes, although the visitors had several scoring opportunities. Eventually Kristian Taft went over, converted by Marcus Raymond, 7-0. 6 minutes later The Cockles finally got their reward when No.8 Hawley scored first for Exmouth, converted by Whitehead, one of 5 successful kicks throughout the afternoon. After half an hour Dave Bargent crossed for the first of his brace increasing the visitors lead, 7-14. The final act of the first half, Sam Whitehead slotted a neat penalty to go in 7-17 at the break.

Likely that the travelling support were wondering how the Cockles were not ahead by more, when the home side took their chance to close the gap 10-17, through a James Aherne monster penalty from just inside his own half. Exmouth had their chances and eventually Bargent went over, converted again, to increase the lead 10-24. Old Pats kept in touch with a penalty from Raymond following another Exmouth infringement, 13-24. Chasing the 4th try, the Cockles exerted their physical presence and it was Prop Charlie Tribble to cross the whitewash, converted by Whitehead to make the score respectable, with the amount of ball possession, 13-31. Perhaps happy with their work the visitors defence looked shaky and Old Pats James Astley went in for the final try of the afternoon, converted by Raymond, 20-31. A good travelling BP win is always pleasing, although defence can win games and maybe the focus for training over the coming weeks. New recruit Steve Pape made his presence felt with some big carries, the forward coach will have been in close contact with some of his hardworking forwards during their shift on Saturday.

In two weeks The Cockles look to consolidate their league position and look to climb the table at the expense of high rollers Barnstaple. A match-up always guaranteed to entertain; The Cockles will look to reverse their away trip loss to the North Devon side, placed second.
