Old Foe hit for six
The annual trip to the Bonfire Field was not something the young Cockles were particularly looking forward to as they had lost their last two outings and had never beaten the local foe of Topsham.
In the morning sun the match started off in what seemed to be an inevitable fashion, with Topsham moving the ball about well, and cutting through some loose tackling from the Exmouth boys, and it wasn’t long before the home side went ahead with a converted try. Exmouth didn’t look down hearted though and defended doggedly for the majority of the rest of the first half, and made regular in-roads into the Topsham half and managed a fantastic try of their own to make the half time score a very equally poised 7-5.
The second half though was a different story and a pleasant surprise to the travelling support, as the young Cockles found a gear that has been sadly lacking of late, they scrummaged, rucked and mauled like their lives depended on it, they ran their lines and kicked with thought and accuracy, from full back to hooker they played as a complete team and ran in try after try against a Topsham team that just didn’t have an answer for the more than determined Cockles.
Though they did concede another try late on it meant that the final score was 12-34 to a very happy and deserved Exmouth team.
