Under 16s (Boys) v Kingsbridge
Away win for Exmouth
Exmouth U16 journeyed down to the South Hams to play Kingsbridge in a friendly fixture and were rewarded with a win.
After only a few minutes the Cockles stole a line-out; Matt Seagar sneaked over from a ruck to dot down: 0-5 to Exmouth.
The Cockles were playing well but Kingsbridge were making them work very hard. However, following a scrum, neat handling and strong running in a set move ended with Ranft putting Hurley into space with a run in to the corner: 0-10.
Kings chose to run a kickable penalty opportunity just outside the visitors’ 22 metre line but the defence repelled the assault on its line and Exmouth ended the half with a good ten-point lead.
After the break King's hard-work and talent got better reward in terms of territory and possession. Some missed tackles from Exmouth and good work from the host back row led to Kings touching down – the conversion was missed.
Perhaps stung into action Exmouth exerted a great deal of pressure when they next visited King’s 22: Fulthorpe picked out runners well, Binks drove fast and straight and Exmouth had a third try.
Kings came back determined and a good line-out drive close to Exmouth’s line led to their second try which was converted. The scores were close as the home team pressed hard in the last quarter but quick reactions and endeavour from the Cockles kept them out leaving the final score 12-15.
Both teams played impressive rugby and will meet again competitively later in the season but the friendly nature of this match allowed every Exmouth player a run out. There were lots of good performances but Jack Silvester’s quick evasive running stood out, getting Exmouth out of trouble several times. Kingsbridge awarded number 10, Harry Ottoway, Man of the Match.
