The Cockles now look doomed to a swift return to National Three South West after they were well beaten by a Cornish side that had pitched up at the Imperial Ground seemingly offering the home side an excellent chance of beginning what would, surely now be a great escape from relegation at the first time of asking.
Exmouth director of rugby Chris Wright lamented: “It was one we thought we could win at home so losing was bad enough and giving them five points made it hurt all the more.”
Wright continued: “Did the right side win? Yes, sadly it most certainly did and the same cannot be said of some of our games at this level this term. On the day we were simply not good enough. We tossed away the chance of an early try and penalty and that is not on at this level. There’s also no using the excuse of being hard done by – again! We were reduced to 13 men in the second half, but both cases were in the red zone. That is not why we lost though. At 20-10 down I thought we had a real chance when we were pressing in their 22. Then they got their second in and that was the end of it for us.”
The Cockles made the worst possible start when they were turned over in front of their own post just two minutes into the contest and it was 10-0 to the visitors after five minutes via a penalty.
