Experienced National League Utility back Tom Whelan becomes the first significant signing of the summer as the Cockles aim to strengthen their squad for the forthcoming season.
Tom has previous National League playing experience at Rosslyn Park, Esher and Plymouth Albion and was the standout player for Devon in this year’s County Championship. He last year went back to his hometown club Sidmouth in a player coach role and will undertake a similar role at the Cockles in what is a significant coup for the East Devon outfit.
Exmouth Head Coach Jon Hill comments:
"We have been tracking Tom’s progress for quite some time and have previously missed out on bringing him to Exmouth, so we are absolutely delighted to finally get our man. He will add loads to our attack and our back play, and he is sure to be very popular amongst the squad.
"The Exmouth guys who have been playing for Devon with him have spoken very highly of him, and for me personally, I look forward to him bringing in some new coaching ideas and concepts, that we feel are needed at the club to freshen things up and add a different perspective to challenge the guys and bring an extra dimension to our training and the way we play.
"Tom has played a lot of National League Rugby, and has experience of playing at 15 and 12 as well as 10. He is an accomplished goal kicker and I am sure will help to bring the best out of those players around him such as George Meadows, Mark Wathes, and Ollie Rice, who will all have significant roles to play at the club next season."
Tom is being sponsored by Refrigerated Vehicle Rental (RVR), who are the 1st xv’s main sponsors.
