As reported in today's Devon Sunday Independent Newspaper, The Devon RFU seem likely to announce a revamped Devon Senior Cup, likely to include Exmouth, Barnstaple, Brixham and Newton Abbot for the 2013-2014 season. If proposals are passed, then a two legged semi final will be introduced to this four team competition, giving each team an opportunity to have a home fixture. As a club, if this is ratified by the DRFU and its clubs, we will be delighted to have an opportunity to continue to play in a competition that we have won for the last three years.
It seems that efforts to set up a wider merit table, to include teams from Cornwall, or a reduced size merit table division one will not be happening for this coming season. The Devon Senior Merit Table seems set to stay in its current format, although it may well see us having certain restrictions upon player involvement, who have been involved in a number of National Two fixtures. We are currently in negotiations with the DRFU as to these restrictions to ensure that we offer competitive rugby for all at Exmouth RFC. In addition to the Devon Merit Table fixtures, we already have agreement with a number of National Two clubs, in principle, to play 1st and 2nd xv double headers as a way of increasing competitive rugby for our fringe players. We are hoping to play the likes of Dings Crusaders, Clifton, Taunton, Redruth, Launceston and Bournmouth 2nd xv's. This is seen by us as a vital way of bridging the gap between 1st and 2nd xv and offering a player pathway for our wider squad members.
A further update will be given when official confirmation has been sent out.
