An entertaining game watched by a healthy crowd completes the Cockles league preparations

Two converted tries in the last five minutes from an Exeter Chiefs Xv , led to a final score line of 5-40 in what was an extremely useful run out and exercise for all involved.

England International Tom Johnson, fellow back rower Ben White and hooker Shaun Malton played the vast majority of the game , in a chiefs team who included Championship players Laurence May, Alex O'Meara and Bar Bartlett, as well as the Cornish Pirates dual registration players including second row pairing of Josh caulfield and Sean Lonsdale.

Two early score in the first half and two late scores in the second separated the two teams in what was a competitive and purposeful fixture .

Head Coach Jon Hill comments:

"The game was just what we needed at this stage of the season and I am delighted with the way that we defended for large parts of the game and showed a lot of character. We knew we would be tested across the full width of the pitch at all times, and our kick chase defence would have to be spot on against a very lively side. We were disappointed to concede twice off first phase , and made a few defensive errors becoming too narrow, but can take a lot from the game and the pace at which it was played.

"Dave Bargent and James Harris were outstanding for us and Ollie Rice looked dangerous with ball in hand. Ben Hawley is playing some of his best rugby at the moment, and this is very pleasing, especially considering that Milo Reynolds picked up an injury tonight and looks set to miss the start of the season.

"It was great to have.a strong Chiefs team down here, and the guys loved competing with the likes of Tom Johnson and Ben White , in what can only have been a very positive experience and one that we can learn from.

"Narrowing tonight's squad down to 20 , whilst also taking into account Isaac Dalton, Nigel Berry and Jim Massey, who were all missing tonight , is going to be hard. The next nine days are going to be so exciting as our preparations step up once again for the challenges ahead. "
