A superb victory on the road characterised by outstanding team spirit

Cleve 21 Exmouth 22

A victory and a bonus point in the very last play of the game away in Bristol was richly deserved for the Cockles.

Two sin bindings, both in bizarre circumstances, and first half injuries to influential scrum Half Ruairi Cushion and Second Row Ollie Pyne made life extremely difficult. The Cockles, having led 10-0, were very quickly 21-10 down at halftime following a whirlwind spell from an impressive Cleve outfit.

Coach Jon Hill Comments:

"A serious regroup at half time saw a revitalised Exmouth team turn the game on its head and nil the opposition in the second half with a display containing pure work rate and a desire to play for the shirt which was extremely pleasing.

"We started the game really well and built a couple of scores, looking very clinical. Our defence was stretched at times , and Cleve played with a lot of width with some dangerous runners. Two key decisions went against us, and we must look at the way in which we regroup when we feel hard done by. Whilst James Harris did nothing wrong and dived on a loose ball, we must accept the referees decision and make it inspire us to defend with an even greater work ethic and desire.

"The second half performance was nothing short of remarkable. Matt Ryan played really well at scrum half , Ollie Rice and Mark Wathes looked lethal every time they had the ball, and James Harris, when he returned to the field, was monumental in defence and thoroughly deserved the man of the match award.

"The team spirit that we showed at the end of the game working our way up the field, demonstrated just how special this squad can be, and we must now look to continue with our momentum, learning from today and celebrating a crucial victory on the road on our first trip out of Devon this season!!"
