Tough conditions. Tough defence.

28 minutes in to the game and Exmouth had defended resolutely against an onslaught from the visitors. It was a testament to improved defensive work that Weston had only kicked two penalties to lead 0-6. Playing against the strong, swirling breeze and driving rain George Meadows slotted for 3-6 after 33 minutes. The Cockles, who had a couple of changes from the previous week team, always looked like they had the beating of their visitors however could not turn possession in to points in the early stages.

The half-time break changed that, after calm reflection on what they needed to improve on, Exmouth took control. 60 seconds after kick off Henry Goldson bagged the first of his two tries, the extra missed by Meadows, 8-6. 5 minutes later Will Ridout dropped after some great work from the forwards, this time to boot of Meadows was on point, 15-7. Weston were clearly here to play and belied their low league position with an individual piece of skill to grab back a try and conversion 15-13. 52 minutes done and the sheltering, damp crowd knew there was more to come from this encounter. On 65 minutes Goldson showed class and strength to bag his brace out wide. Meadows accurate again with a great kick from the touchline, 22-13. Weston worked hard however it was the Cockles forwards who put in the hard yards, ultimately looking fitter as the game went on. Although disrupted at scrum time, in the first half, the lads playing front row, Nick Halse, Will Ridout, Shane Cooper, George Savage and Liam Cullen worked to get on top of their opposition. Back 5 forwards Sam Richardson, Jack Fahy, James Harris, Connor O'Shaughnessy & Mike Richards also fronted up extremely well, against a larger well drilled pack. On 74 minutes Weston missed a penalty that might have made the crowd nervous however it was Nick Headley, off the bench, who went over on 78 minutes for the bonus point 4th try, the breeze took meadows conversion wide. The win sealed at 27-13.
It was the character of the players that fashioned the win, in challenging conditions. A real team effort.

Match Sponsor Plumb Centre Exmouth chose Tight Head Prop Shane Cooper for Man of the Match.

On to next week, away to Ivybridge on their new RFU all-weather surface. One of two unbeaten teams in the league this season.
