Coaches Comments on 55-30 victory

1 month ago By Jon Hill

15 from 15 but plenty to improve on

Another bonus point victory with 55 points scored kept the Cockles joint top of the league after three games of the season.

Head Coach Jon Hill comments:

"Whilst delighted to score 55 points at home and to gain another maximum, we have so much to improve upon and must ramp up our training intensities in the coming weeks.

"We were all extremely happy with the debut performances from Davy McGregor and man of the match Pete Ingoldsby, and pleased to come through a challenge against a side who showed great spirit and were lively throughout. Victory has come at a price however with a number of walking wounded in an already depleted squad.

"Hornets, like ourselves, have lost a number of key players to Taunton and elsewhere in the summer. They are taking a little while to regroup such is the damage caused by the departures and posed a threat throughout. Player Coach Steve Pape was a constant threat with his ball carrying and their backline made a number of line breaks which is something we need to look at in our analysis.

"For the second week running our defensive work lacked attention to detail, and we worked harder with the ball than we did without. We were slow starters again and for the second week running the guys will be disappointed with the way they acquitted themselves in the first half.

"Already playing without Matt Ryan, Charlie Gibbings and back row trio of Sam Richardson, James Harris and Ben Hawley, we were hit by an injury to captain Jack Fahy In the first half and to outside back Henry Goldson in the warm up. We lacked a little bit of composure and leadership at times and struggled to keep the ball in the first half. That said, another strong second half performance allowed us to pull away from Hornets."

The Quick Gin sponsored man of the match went to back rower Pete Ingoldsby (pictured with George Nightingale from Spoken and Quick Gin), who scored two tries on his first league start for the club.
